Firm donates therapeutic bandages to help care for injured, prevent complications

Orangeburg, NY, February 9, 2010 – EuroMed Inc. today announced its donation of a large supply of therapeutic bandages to aid in the relief effort for the survivors of the Haiti earthquake.  Working in cooperation with the Wound Healing Society and the University of Miami, supplies are being delivered to treat thousands of injured people.  EuroMed is a leading designer and manufacturer of wound care management products, and one of a select few custom hydrocolloid manufacturers providing comprehensive private labeling services.

“The events in Haiti are as tragic and compelling as humanly imaginable,” said Kirsten Jensen, a senior Board member at EuroMed.  “The donation of products from our wound care line will be helpful in managing countless wounds because they help to maintain the moist wound environment needed for healing, while creating a barrier against infection.

“Clearly, the eyes of the world are focused on the survival efforts taking place in that devastated country,” she added.  “Our donation is intended to both help those in need, and to pay tribute to the heroes who are preserving the health and well being of Haiti’s population.”

The Wound Healing Society efforts are being channeled through efforts at the University of Miami and spearheaded by Society Board member Robert Kirsner, M.D., Ph.D, Department of Dermatology, University of Miami.  According to him, “We are involved in a major service project to provide medical care and basic supplies to aid in the care of the many injured survivors.  Wound management is a critical element of this initiative, and the University of Miami and the Wound Healing Society are very grateful to EuroMed for its generous contribution.”

Wound care presents a major challenge in post-disaster situations, according to Oscar Alvarez, Ph.D., Director, Wound Care Program, Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY.

“Traumatic wounds in a controlled environment are difficult enough,” he said, “but in a stressful setting these wounds can be devastating.  Complications from infection and malnutrition combined with the lack of suitable facilities for proper treatment makes matters even worse.  The Haitian people are extremely resilient, and they will overcome this terrible tragedy as they have done so many times in their history.  Advanced wound dressings and devices such as those generously donated by EuroMed will reduce infection, relieve pain and expedite wound healing.”

EuroMed’s hydrocolloid dressings create a moist wound environment, facilitate the removal of dead tissue, and provide a barrier to external contamination and bacteria.  EuroMed’s patented beveled edge design helps to promote secure skin adhesion and minimize edge roll up, which allows the dressing to conform better to the wound area and stay on longer.  This helps to reduce the discomfort associated with frequent dressing changes and also helps to reduce the risk of external contamination, both of which would provide clinicians with a big advantage in managing the wounds that they will encounter in Haiti.
